Most people return to feeling normal within a few days to a week or so after a tooth extraction, whereas recovery from wisdom tooth removal may take around 7 – 10 days. Unfortunately, a rare complication known as dry socket can slow down that healing process and cause a significant amount of pain. What exactly is dry socket? How can you prevent it? Continue reading below to learn all the basics about this condition.
What Is Dry Socket?
After a tooth is removed, a blood clot should form at the extraction site. The blood clot protects the socket and plays an important role in your body’s healing process. Dry socket occurs when that clot gets prematurely dislodged or fails to form in the first place. The condition can cause intense pain, similar to what you might experience with a bad toothache.
The risk of developing dry socket is largest 3 – 5 days after an extraction, though it can occur at any time before the extraction site is fully healed.
Preventing Dry Socket
Do not let the possibility of dry socket scare you; for most people, it can be prevented via some basic precautions, such as:
- Do not smoke or use a drinking straw. The suction action could dislodge your blood clot.
- Do not touch your extraction sites. It might be tempting to touch your extraction sites with your tongue or fingers, but doing so is unwise.
- Mind your diet. Crunchy or tough foods could spell trouble for your blood clot. Try to stick to soft, no-chew foods for at least a few days.
- Do not brush the extraction site. For at least 3 – 4 days, your toothbrush should not come into direct contact with your extraction site.
- Avoid spitting vigorously. Instead, swallow extra saliva or use a tissue to absorb it.
What if You Develop Dry Socket?
If, despite your best efforts, you notice pain at your extraction site or see that your tooth socket looks empty, you should see your dentist for dry socket treatment. They can clean the area and place a medicated dressing to promote healing and ease your discomfort. You may also receive a prescription for pain medication. With proper care, most cases of dry socket heal within 7 – 10 days.
Dry socket can be a painful complication. Fortunately, it is usually preventable, and if it does occur, it is highly treatable.
