Traditional dentures may last for 5 – 7 years before they need to be replaced. However, if they do not receive proper maintenance, they might not last nearly that long. They could end up collecting harmful bacteria or incurring serious damage. How can you prevent such issues and help your prosthetic to stand the test of time? This simple guide provides advice to help you take care of your dentures:
Clean Your Dentures Every Day
You should stick to a thorough daily cleaning routine for your dentures:
- Rinse your dentures after each meal to get rid of lingering food particles.
- Gently brush all of your dentures’ surfaces each night. Use a soft brush and clear, mild soap.
- Soak your dentures in a cleaning solution overnight. In the morning, thoroughly rinse off the solution.
Handle Your Dentures Carefully
If your dentures fall on a hard surface, they could easily break. Therefore, try to only take them out of your mouth when you are standing over something that would give them a soft landing, such as a folded towel or a sink full of water.
Also, keep in mind that curious pets and small children have been known to take off with dentures that are left unattended. Be sure to place your dentures out of harm’s way whenever you are not wearing them.
Use Proper Eating Techniques
Missteps when you are eating could damage your dentures or destabilize them, leading to harm for your oral tissues. Make sure to take small bites of food, and move it directly to your molars for chewing (do not bite directly into food with your front teeth). Distribute the food evenly across both sides of your mouth. Also, try to favor soft foods over hard ones. For example, cooked vegetables are usually safer than raw ones. If you choose to eat raw veggies, be sure to cut them into small pieces first.
Visit Your Dentist Regularly
Your dentist wants your dentures to stand the test of time. Try to book an appointment every six months or so. Your dentist can inspect your dentures and your mouth for signs of developing problems and recommend necessary treatments. When necessary, they can also reline (adjust) your dentures so they continue to fit well.
Taking good care of dentures is not complicated! Use the above tips to keep your prosthetic in good shape for the long haul.
