Braces Over 40 — Is It Too Late to Straighten Your Teeth?

Most advertisements for orthodontic services feature children, teens, and young adults. Because of that, it could be easy to conclude that adults with a bit more life experience are not eligible for treatment! The truth is, it is possible to get braces when you are over 40. Many people in their 50s, 60s, and even older could benefit from them as well. This blog post discusses why it is never too late to straighten your teeth.

No Upper Age Limit for Orthodontic Care

No matter the patient’s age, orthodontic treatment works on the same basic principles. When braces apply sustained pressure to the teeth, they can gradually shift thwm into their proper positions. As you age, your teeth’s capacity for movement does not go away. Even though they might move a bit slower than they would have in your younger years, you can still enjoy effective orthodontic treatment.

There are several reasons why you might choose to get braces as a mature adult:

  • You always wanted to straighten your teeth, but your circumstances previously made it impossible for you to get treatment.
  • You had braces as a youth, but now your teeth have shifted slightly due to lack of retainer wear, an accident, or other circumstances.
  • You recognize that your dental misalignment is affecting your confidence and/or threatening your oral health.

What to Expect with Orthodontic Treatment as an Adult

Here are a few notes on what you can expect as you embark on your orthodontic treatment journey as an adult:

  • Feel free to ask about your options. While many adults choose to get traditional metal braces, that might not be your only option. You might also qualify for discreet clear aligners, such as Invisalign.
  • Subtle options are available. Whether you get braces or clear aligners, feel free to ask your dental team how you can keep your treatment looking as discreet as possible.
  • You might have some special considerations. If you have crowns, bridges, or dental implants, they could have a slight bearing on your orthodontic treatment. Your dental team will strive to work around your restorations to help you achieve the best possible results.

Braces are not just for the young! If you would like to straighten your teeth and improve your oral health, orthodontic care may be perfect for you.
